Randy Dandy O

Hugill says this is a capstan pump song heard mainly aboard the old Cape Horners. He heard it from Harding who said it was very popular on a small Nova Scotia barque he once shipped in. Hugill admits to camouflaging one word in the refrain (“might rhyme with rollicking”) and two or three of the verses.

Randy Dandy Oh

Now you’re ready to head for the Horn
Way Hey Roll and go!
Your boots and your clothes, boys, are all in the pawn
To me rollicking randy dandy, oh!

Heave a pawl, now heave away,
Way Hey Roll and go!
The anchor's on board and the cable's all stored
To me rollicking randy dandy, oh!

Breast the bar, bullies and heave her away
Way Hey Roll and go!
Soon we'll be rolling her 'way down the bay.
To me rollicking randy dandy, oh!

Soon we'll be warping her out through the locks
Way Hey Roll and go!
Where them pretty young girls all come down in their flocks.
To me rollicking randy dandy, oh!

So it’s goodbye to Sally and goodbye to Sue
Way Hey Roll and go!
For we are the bullies that can kick her through.
To me rollicking randy dandy, oh!

Roust her up, bullies, the wind's drawing free,
Way Hey Roll and go!
Let's get the "glad-rags" on and drive her to sea,
To me rollicking randy dandy, oh!

It's up them yards, you parish rigged bums
Way Hey Roll and go!
Get your hands out your pockets and don't suck your thumbs,
To me rollicking randy dandy, oh!

We're outward bound for 'Valipo' Bay
Way Hey Roll and go!
Get bending, m'boys, 'tis a hell of a way,
To me rollicking randy dandy, oh!
