Heilan Laddie

A walkaway or stamp-n-go song popular in the Dundee whalers.  It is based on an old Scottish march and dance tune and is of a fair age.  A version was used working cargo in the timber ports of Canada and north-east America.  The very similar Donkey Riding was also popular among the timber droghers, both in Liverpool and Canadian ports, says Hugill.

Heilan Laddie

I went to Church I went to Chapel

Pull Down Below

I went to Church I went to Chapel

Pull Down Below

Oh Wo Highland Landie Pull Down Below

Oh Highland Landie Bonnie Laddie Pull Down Below

Sally lived on an old plantation

The daughter of the Wild Goose Nation

For seven years he courted Sally

But all she did was dilly dally

He bought no gowns and he bought no laces

He never took her fancy places

Oh Sally Brown she loved him dearly

She had his heart so very nearly

Oh Sally Brown he would not marry
And she didn’t care to tarry

This laddie he did get a notion

To sail away across the ocean

He went to Kirk he went to Chapel

He went to Kirk he went to Chapel
