Lord Nelson’s dead and gone
We
sing this parody, as a serious lament, on appropriate occasions – typically
when parading the beef at a regimental dinner on Trafalgar Day. The verses were penned by our ship’s lookout,
to the tune of General Taylor’s dead and Gone
Lord Nelson
Now dear Lord Nelson has gained the day.
Walk him along John, carry him along.
But at Trafalgar he passed away.
Carry him to his burying ground.
To me! Way hay stormy,
Walk him along John carry him along.
To me! Way hay stormy,
Carry him to his burying ground.
They brought him home in a barrel of rum.
Walk him along John carry him along.
Then every sailor did have some.
Carry him to his burying ground. Chorus.
With a silver spoon we shall dig his grave.
Walk him along John carry him along.
His shroud of the finest silk will be made.
Carry him to his burying ground. Chorus.
We’ll lower him down on a golden chain.
Walk him along John carry him along.
On every link we shall carve his name.
Carry him to his burying ground. Chorus.
Now dear Lord Nelson has gained the day.
Walk him along John carry him along.
He’ll rest in glory not fade away.
Carry him to his burying ground.
